Hair
The human body is covered with it except for the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and eyelid surfaces. This called hair which provides protection from UV light and consists of the hair root and hair shaft.
Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the human body. The outermost layer of the skin is called the epidermis. The epidermis is made up of epithelial tissue. The epidermis is completely replaced every 7 to 10 days. The skin surface becomes filled with tough waterproof protein called keratin. The color of skin is determined by DNA. They "regulate the amount of pigment proteins that are produced in skin cells." The protein that gives the skin of color is called melanin which means dark or black. The melanin protects skin from ultraviolet light. The next layer is called the dermis. It is much thicker than the epidermis. The epidermis is made of connective tissue. The dermis contains tough protein which is called collagen. "Collagen also glues the dermis to the underlining layer of tissue known as the subcutaneous layer which is mostly fat." The dermis also contains a protein called elastin. The property of elastin is that it behaves like rubber and it gives your skin the ability o stretch and move in different directions.
Nails
A finger nail and a toe nail begin as a part of the epidermis. So it is then filled with keratin and compressed. As the cell does it is then pushed upward and forward. At the end of base of the nail there is a white area in the shape of the moon called the lunula. The pink part around the nail is called the cuticle. Lastly, the fingertips are filled with sensory receptors.
